About Handlebars

The handlebar is your main connection to the machine, and it takes the damage in a crash. Owners replace a bent or cracked bar, change to a different bend for rider height or reach, or switch to a bar in another color or from another maker.

The first thing to check is diameter. Many bars here are 7/8 inch, and the clamps and grips you use must match. Next is the bend. Names such as RC High, Vintage Mid, Reed/Windham and Vintage/Desert describe a particular shape, with its own height, width and sweep, and a taller bar generally suits a taller rider or more standing time. Some listings are for quads, such as bars labeled for ATVs, and one is a pit bike bar, so read the machine. After installing, tighten the clamp bolts evenly as your manual says and check that the controls, cables and lines reach full steering lock.

Brands in this category include ODI, Biltwell, Renthal, Fire Power and Modquad. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page for model-specific items such as clamps. Risers and clamps are in Risers, Clamps & Brackets, and switches and levers are in Buttons & Switches. See also Other Steering Wheels, Handlebars & Grips. FAQs on UTV and ATV handlebars

What does the bend name on a handlebar mean?

A bend name, such as RC High or Vintage Mid, identifies a particular bar shape, including its height, width and the angle it sweeps back. Two bars of the same diameter can feel quite different. Pick the shape by comparing it with your current bar and your riding position.

How do I decide what handlebar height I need?

Sit in your normal riding position, then stand on the pegs or footboards. The bars should let you reach the controls without hunching or locking your arms. Taller riders and riders who stand a lot often like a taller bar. Risers can raise a bar slightly.

Can I straighten a bent handlebar?

No. Bending a bar back weakens it, and a bar that has been bent can crack. Replace it. Check the clamps, levers and risers for damage as well, since a crash that bends a bar often damages them too.

Will my grips and controls fit a new handlebar?

They will if the bar has the same diameter and enough straight length for your controls. Many bars here are 7/8 inch, so check the size in the listing and the placement of your controls on the old bar before you order.

Do I need longer cables or lines with a taller or wider bar?

Maybe. A taller, wider or pulled-back bar can stretch the throttle cable, brake line and wiring at full steering lock. Turn the bars lock to lock before riding, and if anything pulls tight or kinks, fit longer parts or choose a bar closer to the original.
