About Sensors & Switches

A tether kill switch stops the engine when the rider is separated from the machine. A cord runs from the switch to the rider's wrist, belt or vest, and if the cord is pulled free in a fall, the switch cuts the ignition. The one product in this category is a universal tether kill switch from Maier.

Universal means the switch is not made for one model, so it has to be wired into your machine's kill or ignition circuit. Look at the stock kill switch and the wiring diagram in the owner's manual before you order, and make sure the connectors suit what you have. Mount the switch where the cord cannot catch on the controls, and test it before every ride by starting the engine and pulling the cord.

This is a very small category with a single listing. For related parts, see Ignition Coils, Wiring Harnesses, Cables & Connectors, Relays and Fuses & Fuse Boxes, all part of Electrical & Ignition Components.

FAQs on tether kill switches

What does a tether kill switch do?

A tether kill switch shuts off the engine when a cord attached to the rider is pulled out of the switch. It is meant to stop a machine that keeps running after the rider falls off, so it does not drive on without anyone aboard.

Where should the tether cord attach?

Attach the cord to the rider, such as a wrist, belt loop or vest, not to the handlebar or the machine. The cord has to pull free when the rider is thrown clear. Keep it short enough to stay out of the way of the controls.

How do I check that a kill switch is working?

Start the engine, then pull the cord or press the switch and confirm that the engine stops right away. Do this before every ride. If the engine keeps running, the switch is not wired correctly or has failed, and the machine should not be ridden.

Will a universal kill switch work on my machine?

It can, but it has to be wired in correctly. Check the owner's manual or a wiring diagram for the machine's kill circuit, and make sure the switch type and connectors suit it. If you are not sure how the circuit works, have a shop wire it.
