About Speakers
Speakers on a UTV or ATV have to be built for weather and vibration, since an open machine exposes them to rain, mud, sun and a lot of engine noise. Riders replace damaged speakers, add a set to a machine with no stereo, or move up to bigger sound for long trail days.
Speakers here come in several forms. Cage-mount pods clamp to roll cage tubes, and speaker bars, tube-style speakers and multi-speaker kits are also listed. Universal kits are not made for one model, while kits named for a machine, such as Polaris Pro XP, Can-Am Defender and Maverick X3, are matched to it. Sizes in the titles run from 4 inch two-way speakers to 6.5 inch and 8 inch units, with impedance such as 4 ohm. Match the size to the pod or cutout, look for a weather rating, and check the speaker's power rating against the amplifier you will use. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page for kits made for it.
Brands here include Kicker, Boss Audio, SSV Works, MB Quart and Cardo. To power them, see Amplifiers. A source can come from Infotainment & Multimedia Players, and Complete Audio Kits bundle matched parts. The whole group is Audio, Communication & Navigation.
FAQs on UTV and ATV speakers
What size speakers do I need for my UTV?
The size depends on where they mount. Pods, cage mounts and bars each take a set size, and titles list sizes such as 4 inch and 6.5 inch. Measure the pod or cutout, or buy a kit made for your machine so the size is already matched.
Do UTV speakers need to be waterproof?
They should be at least water resistant. UTV speakers see rain, mud and washdowns, and moisture can damage ordinary car speakers. Look for weatherproof or all-weather wording and a stated rating, and keep connectors sealed.
What does the ohm rating on a speaker mean?
The ohm rating is the speaker's impedance, which is the load it puts on the amplifier. Many UTV speakers are 4 ohm. Match it to what your amplifier supports so the amplifier runs safely and delivers its rated power.
Can I run UTV speakers without an amplifier?
Yes, if the receiver has built-in power, but volume and clarity are limited over engine and wind noise. Speakers sold as amplified include their own power. Otherwise an external amplifier gives more volume with less distortion.
Are cage-mount speaker pods universal?
Not entirely. Many clamp to roll cage tubes, but the clamp size has to match the tube diameter, and some pods are made for particular machines. Check the listing for your machine and the cage tube size.
