Skid Plates, Sliders & Spools
About Skid Plates, Sliders & Spools
Skid plates, sliders and A-arm guards take the hits that would otherwise land on the frame, suspension and engine cases when a UTV or ATV scrapes over a rock, stump or ledge. Owners usually add them after a scraped belly pan or a bent A-arm, or before taking a machine onto rocky trails where the factory protection is thin.
These parts protect different areas. A central skid plate covers the underside of the frame, and the listings here show alloy plates for models such as the Can-Am Defender and Honda Pioneer 500. A-arm guards cover the suspension arms, front or rear, with alloy versions listed for the CFMOTO Z-Force and Kawasaki Mule PRO-MX. Tube-style rock sliders for Polaris XP 1000 and Ranger models take side impacts. For quads, the category also lists a swingarm skid plate and a front chain slider for Honda and a billet aluminum case saver for the Yamaha YFZ450.
Aluminum is lighter and slides well over rock, while steel is heavier and takes more punishment for its thickness. Every plate is made for specific model years and factory layouts, so pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page and check the fitment line before ordering.
Brands include Pro Armor, Maier, Cycra, Lone Star Racing/Tech 5 Ind., Moose Offroad and Rival Powersports USA. Related protection is in Frame & Crash Protectors, Engine Guards and Handlebar Guards & Protection, all part of Guards & Protection.
FAQs on skid plates and sliders
What is the difference between a skid plate and rock sliders?
A skid plate protects the underside of the machine, such as the frame and drivetrain, from rocks and stumps. Rock sliders run along the sides and take impacts to the lower body when you slide against a rock or ledge. Many off-road builds use both.
Is an aluminum or steel skid plate better?
Aluminum is lighter and slides over rock easily, but thin aluminum can gouge or bend under hard hits. Steel takes more punishment for its thickness but weighs more and can rust if the coating chips. Choose by where and how hard you ride.
What do A-arm guards protect?
A-arm guards cover the control arms that hold each wheel. They shield the arms from rocks, stumps and ledges and give the arm a smooth surface to slide on. They are sold front or rear for specific models, so match year and model.
How do I install a skid plate?
Most bolt to existing frame mounting points with hand tools. Plates are heavy, so support the plate while you start the bolts, use the hardware supplied, and tighten to the maker's instructions. Recheck the bolts after the first rides, since vibration can loosen them.
Will a skid plate fit if my machine has a lift or other accessories?
Not always. Plates are made for a specific model year and the factory layout, and aftermarket bumpers, winches, lift kits or exhaust parts can change clearances. Check the product notes for your model and year, and read the fitment line before buying.
