About Flywheels & Flywheel Parts

On a magneto system, the flywheel is the rotor that bolts to the end of the crankshaft and carries the magnets. It spins around the stator to make electricity, and its weight also smooths out the way the engine runs. This category lists two magneto flywheel rotors from RM Stator, one for Polaris and one for Arctic Cat and Suzuki machines, both listed as heavy duty.

Replace a rotor that is cracked or damaged, or one whose taper or keyway has been damaged by a loose nut. Match it to your make and model, since rotors differ in size, mounting and magnet layout. Removal and installation need a flywheel puller made for the engine, so do not hammer on the crankshaft, and the nut should be tightened to the torque in your manual. Check the stator and the crankshaft taper while the rotor is off.

This is a very small category, so pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. Related parts are Crankshafts, Engine Bearings and Gaskets, Seals & Kits, all part of Engines & Engine Parts.

FAQs on magneto flywheels

What does a magneto flywheel rotor do?

The magneto flywheel rotor carries magnets and spins around the stator coils. That motion generates the electricity for charging and, on many engines, ignition. It also adds rotating weight, which helps the engine run smoothly.

How do I remove a flywheel safely?

Use a flywheel puller made for the thread on your engine, hold the flywheel with a holder or strap while loosening the nut, and follow your service manual. Do not strike the crankshaft or the flywheel with a hammer.

Does the flywheel affect ignition timing?

On many engines it does, because a keyway or mark on the flywheel sets its position relative to the crankshaft and the ignition pickup. Install it aligned as your manual describes, and check the timing after reassembly if the manual calls for it.

Do I need to replace the stator when I replace the flywheel?

Not necessarily. Inspect the stator for burnt windings, rub marks and damage while the flywheel is off, and replace it only if it is faulty. Replace the cover gasket whenever the cover is opened, and tighten the cover bolts evenly.
