Air Vests

About Air Vests

An air vest is a wearable airbag. Sensors watch for the movement pattern of a crash, and when one is detected the vest inflates quickly around the upper body. Riders look at them as extra protection on top of a good jacket and armor.

The three listings are Alpinestars Tech-Air 3 products: a System, a Leather Vest and a Stella System. Read each description to see whether the item is the airbag system or a vest that carries it, and which jackets or suits it works with. Fit matters more than usual, so follow the size chart and the maker's fitting instructions. Electronic systems also need power and service, so read the manual for charging and for what to do after the system inflates.

An air vest adds to a protective jacket, pants, gloves and boots and does not replace them. For other armor see Back Protectors, Chest Protectors and Protective Gear. The brand here is Alpinestars.

FAQs on motorcycle air vests

How does a motorcycle air vest work?

An air vest uses sensors to detect the motion of a crash. When the system decides a crash is happening, it inflates an airbag around the rider's upper body very quickly. How it detects a crash depends on the model, so read the maker's manual.

Do I still need a jacket and armor with an air vest?

Yes. An air vest adds protection but does not replace abrasion-resistant clothing or armor. Follow the maker's instructions on what to wear with it, and keep wearing a helmet, jacket, pants, gloves and boots made for riding.

How do I know a Tech-Air system will work with my jacket?

Check the listing and the maker's compatibility information. Some systems are made to be worn inside specific jackets or suits, so do not assume one fits any garment. It has to sit in the right position and be sized correctly.

What happens to an air vest after it inflates?

In general, a vest that has inflated needs to be checked, serviced or re-armed by the maker or an authorized service point before use. Follow the manual for your model, and do not try to repack or repair it yourself.
