Running Boards & Step Bars

About Running Boards & Step Bars

Nerf bars are tubular side steps that give your boots a place to rest and make it easier to climb into a side-by-side. Owners add them for foot position on rough trails, or to protect the lower side of the machine from rocks.

There are four listings here. Three are nerf bar sets for the Polaris RZR, including a 2-seater set and a set for the RZR 1000, and one set for the Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R from 2017 to 2019. The fourth is Rox Grip Strips. Side steps are made for a particular model, wheelbase and seat count, so a bar for a 2-seat machine will not fit a 4-seat version. Match the year and model in the listing and use the Ride Finder at the top of the page.

Brands here include Moose Offroad, Rox Speed FX and Rivco Products. Related categories are Bumpers & Parts, Grab Bars & Handles and Body Parts, Doors & Fenders, all part of Body & Frame.

FAQs on nerf bars and step bars

Are nerf bars the same as running boards?

Both are side steps. Nerf bars are tubular bars that run along the side of the machine below the doors or seat, and running boards are wider, flatter steps. On side-by-sides, tubular nerf bars are the common style.

Do nerf bars protect the body of a UTV?

They keep boots from sliding off and take some rubbing along the lower side. How much protection you get depends on the design. Heavy rock protection is a different type of product, so check what the listing describes.

Will nerf bars made for a 2-seat RZR fit a 4-seat?

Not normally. Wheelbase and body length differ, so side steps are made for particular models and seat counts. Match the model, year and seat configuration in the listing before you order, because a difference in length or mounting points means the bars will not bolt on.

How do I install nerf bars?

Most bolt to the frame or existing mounting points. Check that hardware is included, follow the instruction sheet, tighten the fasteners to the values in the instructions or owner's manual, and recheck them after the first ride.
