Daytime Running Lights
About Daytime Running Lights
Running lights stay on while the engine runs so other drivers notice the bike during the day, and some also work as brake lights. Riders add them to look more visible in traffic or to replace a light that has stopped working.
The samples show two main styles. Quad pod running lights are a small cluster of lights that you mount on the bike and wire in. Seat bolt mounted running and brake lights fit at the rear, are listed by Harley-Davidson model and year range, such as Street Glide Ultra and Electra Glide Ultra Classic, and combine a running light with a brake function. Pick by where you want the light and by its function: running only, or running plus brake. Match the model and year, and look for a load harness so the light connects without cutting wires. Think about the added electrical load and the placement, so the light does not shine into the eyes of other riders.
Brands in this category include CUSTOM DYNAMICS, PAUL YAFFE BAGGER NATION and BADLANDS. The main lights are in Headlight Assemblies, Tail & Brake Light Assemblies and Turn Signal Light Assemblies, and decorative lights are in Accessory Lighting. Pick your bike in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. The whole group is Lighting & Lamps.
FAQs on daytime running lights
Do running lights replace the headlight?
No. Running lights are an additional light for visibility and do not replace the headlight, tail light or brake light. Keep all of your required lights working, and follow local lighting rules for any lights you add to the bike.
How are running lights wired?
Most kits connect to a switched power source and a ground, and some come with or need a load harness for particular models. Follow the instructions for your kit and bike, fuse the power lead and keep wiring away from heat and moving parts.
What is a seat bolt mounted running and brake light?
It is a small light that mounts at the seat bolt at the rear of the bike and works as a running light with a brake function. The listings name the model and years, so match your bike and year before you order.
Will running lights drain my battery?
LEDs draw little current, but the total load still matters. Running lights are normally powered from a switched circuit while the engine runs, so check the kit's current draw against your bike's spare charging capacity. Do not leave them on with the engine off.
Can I use running lights as brake lights or turn signals?
Only if the product is made for it. Some listings work as both running and brake lights, while others are running lights only. Do not connect a light to a circuit it is not made for. The listing names its functions, so read it before you buy.
