About Complete Forks

A complete fork assembly replaces the whole front suspension leg set instead of individual parts. This page also lists fork kits and the setup parts and tools used with them, including preload spacers, spring compressors, air pumps and spring perches. Riders shop here to replace damaged forks, to change the style of the front end, or to set up forks they already own.

Replacing the whole fork makes sense when tubes or sliders are damaged beyond a seal job, or when you want a different style. Before you order, check that the axle size, brake mounting, wheel size and the tube diameter fit your bike and triple trees. A preload spacer adds spring preload, which changes how far the front end sits down on the springs. A spring compressor is used to hold the spring compressed while you remove the fork cap, which should be done carefully because the spring is under tension. Some forks use air as part of the suspension, and a small gauge pump, in a range such as 0 to 30 or 0 to 60 psi, sets that pressure.

Brands listed here include SDI, FACTORY CONNECTION, RACE TECH, PROGRESSIVE SUSPENSION and PAUL YAFFE BAGGER NATION. Pick your bike in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. For repairs rather than replacement, see Fork Rebuild Kits, Fork Springs and Triple Trees, all in Fork Suspension & Parts.

FAQs on complete motorcycle forks and fork setup parts

When should I replace complete forks instead of rebuilding them?

Consider complete forks when the tubes are bent, the sliders are cracked or damaged, or you want a different style or size. If the forks only leak or feel tired, new seals, bushings, oil or springs are usually all that is needed.

What does a fork preload spacer do?

A preload spacer sits above the spring and compresses it slightly, so the bike rides a little higher and sags less. It does not change the spring rate. Too much preload makes the ride harsh, so follow the maker's guidance.

Why do I need a fork spring compressor tool?

A fork spring is held under tension by the cap, and the tool holds it in place while you remove or fit the cap. Doing this without the right tool can let the spring or cap fly out, so use it as directed and wear eye protection.

What is a gauge pump for air forks used for?

Some forks use air pressure as part of the suspension. A small gauge pump with a low range, measured in psi, lets you set and check that pressure as the fork maker specifies. It is not meant for filling tires.

How do I know complete forks will fit my motorcycle?

Match the tube diameter, the axle size, the brake caliper mounting and the stem length to your bike, and look for the make, model and years in the listing. Pick your bike in the Ride Finder to narrow the list.
