Silencers, Mufflers & Baffles
About Silencers, Mufflers & Baffles
A silencer, muffler or baffle is the last part of the exhaust, where gas is slowed and quieted before it leaves the machine. Riders replace one because it is dented, rusted or burned out, because the packing inside has worn and the machine got louder, or to change the sound and look. This category has slip-on mufflers for side-by-sides such as the RZR XP Turbo, silencers for quads and some full-system exhausts.
The main choice is how much to change. A slip-on silencer fits where the stock one was, keeps the head pipe and is the simplest change. A full system, which the Signature RS-2 listings are, replaces the pipe and silencer together and changes sound and flow more. Next, sound level: some listings are described as quiet or silent designs, so read the notes. Many riding areas require a spark arrestor and set sound limits. Finish is also a choice, from stainless to anodized titanium.
Brands in this category include Helix, Yoshimura, Akrapovic, Pro Circuit, FMF Racing and DG Performance. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. Other parts of the system are Exhaust System Kits, Exhaust Pipes & Tips and Exhaust Gaskets & Seals. The whole group is Exhaust & Emission Systems.
FAQs on silencers and mufflers
What is the difference between a silencer and a muffler?
Both names describe the part that quiets the exhaust, and listings use them interchangeably. What matters is whether it fits your machine, whether it is a slip-on or a full system, and how loud it is.
Why is my exhaust getting louder over time?
On many silencers the sound-deadening packing wears out and the machine gets louder. A loose or cracked muffler or a leaking joint can do the same. Inspect the silencer and its joints, and replace or repack it if the packing has failed.
What does a baffle do in a silencer?
A baffle is an internal insert that slows and breaks up the exhaust gas to reduce noise. On some silencers it can be removed. Removing it makes the machine louder and can change how the engine runs, and sound limits apply in many riding areas.
Do I need a spark arrestor?
Many public riding areas require one, and a silencer that includes one is the easiest way to comply. Check the rules for where you ride, and read the listing to confirm whether the silencer has one.
How do I find a silencer that fits my machine?
Match the make, model and year, and check whether it is a slip-on for the stock head pipe or a full system. Fit varies from year to year. The Ride Finder narrows the list, and the listing title usually names the models.
