Outer ring is electro-less nickel coated steel for ultimate durability and is designed with the minimum amount of material to keep weight down. Pairing a fresh chain with fresh sprockets is always the right call: a new chain on worn sprockets adapts to worn tooth geometry immediately, shortening both.
