Manifolds & Headers
About Manifolds & Headers
Headers, also called head pipes or manifolds, are the first section of an exhaust and bolt straight to the cylinder head. They collect exhaust from each cylinder and set the layout for the rest of the system. Riders replace them when pipes are dented, cracked or rusted, to change the layout or the look, or as the base for a different muffler setup. On off-road bikes the header often pairs with a matching muffler.
Layout is the first decision. The listings here include true dual head pipes, 2-into-2 crossover headers that link the pipes from both cylinders, and 4-into-1 head pipes for four-cylinder sport bikes. Pick the layout that matches your bike's cylinder count and your styling. Next comes material and finish: stainless steel, titanium and chrome all appear here.
Check that the header works with your stock muffler or the muffler you plan to fit, and that it has a threaded port if your bike uses an oxygen sensor. Always fit new gaskets, and plan on a tune if the maker recommends one. Some headers need heat shields to keep the heat off your leg or paint.
Brands in this category include Cobra, S&S Cycle, Yoshimura, Akrapovic and FMF Racing. Exhaust fit depends on the exact model and year, so pick your bike in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. To finish the install you will need parts from Exhaust Gaskets & Seals and Clamps, Flanges, Hangers & Hardware, and the section that comes after the header is in Silencers, Mufflers & Baffles.
FAQs on motorcycle headers and head pipes
What is the difference between a header, a head pipe and a manifold?
On motorcycles the terms overlap. All describe the pipes that bolt to the cylinder head and lead into the rest of the exhaust. The listing's description shows what you actually receive, including whether it covers one cylinder or several.
What is a crossover header?
A crossover header joins the pipes from two cylinders, often on a V-twin, so that exhaust from both can flow together before the muffler. It changes both the look and the sound, so check the fitment notes for your model.
Do I need new gaskets when I install headers?
Yes. Exhaust port gaskets are normally single-use, and a fresh set helps the header seal against the head. Tighten the flange fasteners evenly and in the order that the maker specifies.
Will aftermarket headers work with my oxygen sensor?
Only if the header has a threaded port for it. Many are made with one, but some are not, so check the listing before buying. Without the sensor in place, a fuel-injected bike can't read the exhaust.
Why do headers turn blue or gold?
Heat tints stainless and chrome, and a bluish or gold tone is a normal cosmetic effect of high temperature, not a defect. It usually does not affect the pipe's strength, though a heat shield or wrap can limit it.
