Drive Belt Pulleys & Tensioners
About Drive Belt Pulleys & Tensioners
This is a very small category. It lists a drive belt and two cam chain tensioners, one of them for Polaris 570, 900 and 1000 engines. Riders look here for a tensioner when the timing chain rattles, or for a belt when the old one has worn out.
A cam chain tensioner keeps the timing chain tight so the camshafts stay in time with the crankshaft, and it is specific to the engine. Check the engine named in the listing. The drive belt is listed by width and outside circumference, such as 1-7/16 inch wide by 44-7/32 inch around, and both numbers must match your machine's belt. Do not assume the category holds pulleys, because the products listed are the belt and tensioners.
Brands here include Ultimax, Quad Logic and Hot Cams. For more belts and chains, see Final Drive Belts & Chains and Primary Drive Belts & Chains, and for sprockets see Sprockets. The group is Final & Primary Drive Parts & Kits.
FAQs on UTV and ATV belt pulleys and tensioners
What does a cam chain tensioner do?
It presses on the timing chain to take up slack, so the camshafts stay in time with the crankshaft. A tensioner that fails lets the chain go slack, which can rattle or even skip a tooth. Replace it as the manual directs.
What happens if a cam chain tensioner fails?
The chain can rattle, jump teeth and throw off valve timing, which can bend valves or damage the engine. If you hear chain noise at start-up or idle, stop and have it checked.
Where do I find the correct belt size for my machine?
Check your owner's manual, or read the numbers printed on the old belt. Match the width and the outside circumference in the listing. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page to filter belts made for it.
Do I need to take care when installing a tensioner?
Yes. Most tensioners must be set or reset in a particular way, and installing one wrongly can leave the chain loose or overtightened. Follow your service manual, and check the cam timing if the manual says to.
