About Tools & Supplies
Many powersports jobs need more than a basic socket set. A flywheel puller, a cam chain tensioner holder or a cylinder leakage tester does one job on one kind of engine, and trying to do that job without it often damages the part. Riders also shop here for trail repair gear, such as tire plug kits, and for shop tools like spoke wrenches and shock spanners.
Match the tool to the part. Pullers and installers are made for a particular thread, spline or housing, so read the listing for the engine or model it suits, and check your service manual for the exact tool needed. A set, such as the gear puller set or the star bit socket set, makes sense if you will use it again. A single-purpose tool is the better buy for a job you may do once. For the trail, a pocket tire plugger kit with CO2 inflation takes little room and can get you home after a puncture.
Brands in this category include FOX, EXCEL, Woody's, Helix and Jims. Once you know the job, the parts are in related groups such as Engines & Engine Parts, Brakes & Brake Parts and Electrical & Ignition Components. The whole vehicle section is UTV | ATV.
FAQs on UTV and ATV tools
Do I need a special puller to remove a flywheel?
Yes, in most cases. Many flywheels sit on a tapered crankshaft and are pulled off with a puller that threads into the flywheel, and prying or hammering can damage the crank or the flywheel. Use a puller that matches the thread listed for your engine, and follow the service manual for the holding tool and the torque on reassembly.
What does a cylinder leakage tester show?
It pressurizes the cylinder with the piston at the top of its stroke and shows how much air escapes. That helps you tell whether the loss is through the rings, the valves or the head gasket. It needs shop air and a gauge, so follow the maker's instructions.
Which tools should I carry on the machine for trail repairs?
A tire plug kit with a way to inflate the tire, wrenches and sockets that fit your machine's fasteners, pliers, zip ties and tape cover most problems. Check which fastener sizes your model uses before you pack, and keep the kit where vibration will not loosen it.
Are UTV and ATV fasteners metric or inch?
Many fasteners are metric, but some parts use inch sizes, so check before you buy tools for a specific job. The service manual lists the sizes for your model. A set with both metric and inch sockets covers more cases.
Should I buy a tool set or a single tool?
Buy a set if the tools cover jobs you will repeat, such as bit sockets or gear pullers of several sizes. Buy a single tool when the job is specific to your machine, like removing a clutch cover or holding a cam chain tensioner. In both cases check that the listing fits your model.
