About Hand Brake Levers

The hand brake lever is what you squeeze to slow the machine, and it is the part most likely to snap off in a tip-over or crash. Replacing a broken lever is the usual reason to shop here, along with worn pivots and a wish for a different finish.

Replacement levers in this category come in black and polished finishes, and the range includes OEM-style levers and a billet aluminum lever with a grooved blade. Fit is by machine and year range. Listings show Honda ATC models from the early 1980s, the 1986 to 1989 Honda TRX250R and Kawasaki models from 1987 to 2013. The lever has to line up with the master cylinder or cable on your machine, so confirm your model and year, and pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page.

Brands with listings here include Parts Unlimited, Rekluse, Risk Racing and Moose Offroad. For related parts, see Clutch Levers, Clutch & Hand Brake Lever Kits and Foot Brake Levers & Pedals, all in Hand & Foot Controls.

FAQs on ATV hand brake levers

How do I check that a new brake lever works properly?

Squeeze it: it should move smoothly, spring back fully and not bind or drag the brake. It should feel firm. If the lever feels spongy or goes to the bar, stop and have the brake system checked before riding.

What is the difference between an OEM-style and a billet brake lever?

An OEM-style lever copies the shape of the original and is the usual straight replacement. A billet lever is machined from aluminum and often has a different shape, such as a grooved blade. Both still need to match your machine.

Why does my brake lever feel loose at the pivot?

A worn pivot bolt or lever bore causes side play. Replace the lever, and the pivot bolt if it is worn, and tighten the hardware as your manual says. Do not ride with a cracked or badly loose lever.

Does the finish of a brake lever matter?

Finish is mostly cosmetic. Black and polished levers do the same job if they are the right part for your machine. Check the model and year range in the listing rather than choosing by color.
