Engine Rebuild Kits & Components
About Engine Rebuild Kits & Components
A rebuild kit gathers the parts that wear most so you do not need to order them one by one. This category lists top end kits, bottom end kits, full engine rebuild kits, cylinder kits, piston kits with gaskets and crankshaft replacement kits for Yamaha, Honda, Polaris, Kawasaki and Can-Am machines.
Pick the level of rebuild first. A top end kit deals with the piston and cylinder area, a bottom end kit with the crankshaft side, and a full rebuild kit with both, but contents vary, so read the listing. Then pick the bore size. Standard bore kits restore the original size, and big bore or oversized kits, such as the 105.00 mm Yamaha cylinder kit, increase displacement and need matching parts. Measure the cylinder before ordering, and expect to need fresh oil, a filter and thread-locker for the job.
Brands in this category include Vertex, Hot Rods, Wiseco, WSM and Cylinder Works. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. Single parts are in Pistons, Rings & Piston Kits, Complete Cylinders, Crankshafts, Engine Bearings and Gaskets, Seals & Kits, all part of Engines & Engine Parts.
FAQs on engine rebuild kits
What is a top end rebuild?
A top end rebuild replaces the parts at the top of the engine, usually the piston, rings and gaskets, and often the cylinder, along with checking the head and valves. It is the common repair for worn rings, low compression or smoke.
How do I tell whether I need a top end or a full rebuild?
A compression or leak-down test points to the piston, rings and valves. A knock from low in the engine, metal in the oil, or play in the crankshaft points to the bottom end. If both areas are worn, a full rebuild is the right job.
What does oversize mean on a rebuild kit?
Oversize means the piston is larger than standard to suit a cylinder that has been bored, or a deliberately larger bore. The kit must match the cylinder bore. Measure the cylinder, or have a shop measure it, before ordering.
What else do I need besides the kit?
Fresh oil and a filter, thread-locker or assembly lubricant if the manual calls for it, a torque wrench, and measuring tools. Some jobs also need a cylinder hone or a machine shop for boring. Check the gasket and seal contents of the kit.
