About Tracks & Studs

Tracks and studs decide how a snowmobile grips, floats and wears. People shop here for a replacement track, a stud kit for icy trails or racing, new track slides, or small parts like backer plates, ice scratchers and tire chains for traction.

A track is sized by length, width and lug height, plus its drive pitch. The Ice Cobra listed here, for example, is 154 inches long by 15 inches wide with a 1.60 inch lug and a 2.86 inch pitch. Match all of these to your sled and suspension. Studs are listed by type, such as screw studs or push-through carbide, by length in inches or millimeters, and by pack size.

The stud must suit the lug height and the track's ply, and backer plates are sold for 2-ply tracks. A stud template sets the spacing. Track slides, the plastic strips that ride on the suspension rails, are chosen by profile and length. Ice scratchers throw snow at the heat exchangers on dry trails.

Brands in this category include Woody's, Garland, Emerson, Parts Unlimited and Fast-Trac. Related parts are in Shocks & Suspension, Clutch & Drive Belts and Other Parts. Read why a part did not fit before you order.

FAQs on snowmobile tracks and studs

How do I read a snowmobile track size?

Track size is written as length, width and lug height, in inches, with a separate pitch that gives the spacing of the drive lugs. A listing such as 154 x 15 with a 1.60 inch lug and 2.86 inch pitch describes all of them. Match every number to your sled.

How many studs do I need?

That depends on your track, the pattern the stud maker recommends and the rules where you ride. Studs are sold in packs, such as 96, 200 or 1000, and the maker supplies pattern charts. Follow the chart for your track length and lug, rather than guessing.

Do I need backer plates with studs?

Backer plates support the stud from inside the track and spread the load, and stud makers specify them for particular tracks. The ones listed here are for 2-ply tracks. Check your stud maker's instructions to see whether your track needs them.

What are track slides for?

Slides are the plastic strips on the suspension rails that the track's guide clips ride on. They wear down over time and need replacing before they are worn through. Choose by profile and length, as listed, and check that they match your suspension.

What does an ice scratcher do?

Ice scratchers press against the track on hard-packed or dry trails and throw snow and ice at the heat exchangers, which helps cool the engine when there is little loose snow. They wear over time, so check them and follow the kit's instructions.
