Exhaust & Emission Systems

About Exhaust & Emission Systems

Everything from the exhaust port to the end of the tailpipe is covered here, along with the oxygen sensors that watch what comes out. Riders shop in this section to fix a rusted or leaking pipe, to change the sound, to save weight, or to restyle the back of the bike.

The first choice is how much to replace. Exhaust System Kits are complete systems, such as the 2:1 setups that merge both pipes into one outlet, or true duals, with a separate pipe for each cylinder. Silencers, Mufflers & Baffles cover slip-ons that fit over the existing head pipes. Manifolds & Headers and Exhaust Pipes & Tips cover the pipes between them, and Oxygen Sensors are the sensors in the system.

Installation needs supporting parts. Exhaust Gaskets & Seals and Clamps, Flanges, Hangers & Hardware close the joints, and Heat Shields & Wraps reduce heat. For anything else, try Other Exhaust & Emission System Parts.

Brands in this section include Cobra, Akrapovic, Bassani Xhaust, DG Performance and Emgo. Many listings are for Harley-Davidson Softail and Sportster models, with others such as the Yamaha V-Star, and fit depends on the exact model and year. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. Harley owners comparing two well-known brands can read Vance & Hines vs Bassani.

FAQs on exhaust and emission parts

What is the difference between a 2-into-1 and a true dual exhaust?

A 2-into-1 system joins both head pipes into a single pipe and muffler. A true dual has a separate pipe and muffler for each cylinder. The two differ in appearance and sound, and each is made for particular models.

Will a slip-on muffler fit any motorcycle?

No. Slip-ons are made for a specific model, with the right inlet size and mounting points for that exhaust. Check the listed year and model, and any notes about saddlebags, passenger pegs or the original head pipes before you order.

Why does my exhaust leak at the header flange?

A leak at the flange is usually a worn or crushed gasket, a loose fastener, or a warped flange. Fit a new gasket, clean the surfaces and tighten evenly as the manual shows.

What should I check after installing a new exhaust?

Check for leaks at every joint when the engine is warm, retighten clamps and fasteners after the first heat cycles as the maker advises, and make sure the pipes clear bags, tires and wiring. Recheck after the first few rides.

What does an oxygen sensor do?

An oxygen sensor reads the oxygen left in the exhaust gas so the ECU can adjust the fuel mixture, on bikes that use one. It threads into the exhaust and is replaced when it fails, as the service manual describes.
