About Other Engine Parts
This category holds engine parts that do not belong to one of the main engine groups: small internal components, fastener and dress-up kits, breather and vent parts, shims and a few tools. Riders end up here when they are chasing one small part for a repair or build rather than a major assembly.
Because the range is mixed, identify the part by name and then by fitment. Examples include valve shims sold in 5 packs and sized by diameter and thickness in millimeters, cam installation kits, rocker shafts, thrust washers sized in thousandths of an inch, crankcase breathers and vent filters, a cylinder sleeve, and engine fastener kits for a model such as the Yamaha YZ450F. Cable, hose and wire dress-up kits come in chrome or black. Use your service manual's part numbers where you have them, and pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page to narrow the list.
Brands include S&S Cycle, Prox, Bolt, Drag Specialties and Colony. Larger jobs are covered in Engine Rebuild Kits & Components and Complete Engines, and the whole group is Engines & Engine Parts. If you are unsure of a fit, our guide on why a part didn't fit covers what to check.
FAQs on other engine parts
What is a valve shim and how is it chosen?
On engines that use shims, a shim of a particular thickness sets the small gap between the cam and valve. You measure the gap, work out the thickness needed from the service manual, and fit the shim that corrects it.
What does a crankcase breather do?
It lets pressure from gases that slip past the piston rings escape from the crankcase, so oil is not pushed out through seals. The vapor is usually routed to a filter or the intake, as the manual shows.
How do I choose a thrust washer thickness?
Thrust washers set the end play of a part such as a cam gear. Measure the end play as the service manual describes, then choose the washer thickness that brings it within the stated range.
What is a cylinder sleeve used for?
A sleeve is a liner fitted in the cylinder to repair a damaged bore or to restore it for re-use. Fitting a sleeve normally needs machine shop work, so the cylinder usually goes to a machinist.
How do I find the right part in a mixed category like this?
Search by the name of the part, then check fitment by model and year. The Ride Finder at the top of the page narrows listings to your machine, and the original part number from your manual helps confirm the match.
