Knee Protectors
About Knee Protectors
Knee protection ranges from soft pads to hinged braces. Riders buy it to cushion the knee against hits and flying stones, to add a brace for riding when the knee needs more support, or to fit a youth rider. Pads, straps and liners wear out and need replacing.
The listings fall into a few types. Knee guards and pads, such as the EVS Epic Knee Pad, Thor Sector GP guards, the CE Barricade Flex guards and the Option knee pads, cushion the joint, and the EVS Hex Pro is a combined knee and shin guard. D3O LP1 guards are inserts for pants. Braces, such as the EVS Web Eclipse, SX01, SX02 and Axis Sport and the POD K4 V2.0, have a structured frame that limits joint movement. For an injured knee, ask a medical professional which brace suits you. Check whether a listing is one piece or a pair, and use the size chart.
Brands here include THOR, POD, EVS, ICON and Alpinestars. For spare pads, cuffs and straps see Protector Parts, and for other joints see Elbow & Shoulder Guards and Hip Protectors.
FAQs on knee guards and knee braces
What is the difference between a knee guard and a knee brace?
A knee guard or pad cushions the knee against impacts and abrasion. A knee brace has a structured frame with hinges that limits how far the joint can move. Some riders wear both. Check the listing to see which type you are looking at.
How do I size knee protection?
Use the maker's size chart, which normally uses a measurement around the leg or a size range such as LG/XL. Braces are fitted more closely than pads, so measure carefully and check whether the listing is one piece or a pair.
How should knee guards fit?
They should sit over the kneecap, stay in place when you bend your leg and not cut off circulation. Sit in the riding position with them on, and if they slide or bunch, adjust the straps or choose another size.
Can I wear knee armor inside my pants?
Insert-style armor, like D3O knee guards, goes into pockets built into riding pants made to take it. Strap-on guards and braces are worn on the leg. Check that your pants have room for what you plan to wear.
Where do I find replacement pads or straps for a brace?
Spare parts for braces are in Protector Parts, and some replacement pads, such as Thor replacement knee pads, are listed here. Match the part to your exact brace model and size, since parts are not interchangeable between models.
