Bearings
About Bearings
Drivetrain bearings let shafts spin with little friction while holding them in place inside the differential, transmission and axle. When one wears, the shaft gets play, the gears run out of alignment and you hear whining or growling. Riders shop here for differential bearing and seal kits, transmission bearing kits and carrier kits.
Most listings are kits made for one machine, labeled front or rear differential, trans axle or transmission, with the model and years in the title. Match the position and the model before ordering. Many kits include seals, which are normally replaced at the same time, so check each listing for what it contains. Sprague carrier kits are listed for specific Polaris models. These jobs usually call for a press or bearing drivers, the service manual and fresh gear oil afterward.
Brands in this category include Hot Rods, Emerson, EPI, All Balls and Moose Offroad. Related parts are in Differential Parts, Gaskets & Seals and Axles, all within Transmission & Drivetrain. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page to see kits made for it.
FAQs on UTV and ATV drivetrain bearings
Why do differential bearing kits include seals?
The seals are removed or disturbed when the bearings come out, and a worn seal can leak gear oil or let water in. Replacing bearings and seals together avoids repeating the job. Check each listing to see exactly what is in the kit.
What does a bad differential bearing sound like?
A whine or growl that changes with speed is the usual sign, sometimes with play at the axle or metal particles in the gear oil. Check the fluid, then inspect the bearing by hand if you can, and follow your service manual for acceptable play.
Do I need special tools to replace transmission or differential bearings?
Usually yes. Many jobs need a press or bearing drivers to seat bearings squarely, plus snap-ring pliers and a way to hold the gears. Without them it is easy to damage the housing or the bearing. A shop can do the pressing if you do not have the tools.
Should I change the gear oil after replacing bearings?
Yes, refill with the fluid grade and amount your manual specifies, and drain old oil that may hold metal debris. Check the level after the first ride and look for leaks around the seals.
How do I know which bearing kit fits my machine?
Match the model, the model years and the position, such as front or rear differential, in the listing. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page to filter results, and compare the old bearing numbers if you have them.
