Transmission & Drivetrain
About Transmission & Drivetrain
The transmission and drivetrain carry engine power through the clutch or drive belt, the gearbox, the differentials and the axles to the wheels. When something in that chain wears, riders notice slipping, a whine or growl, fluid leaks or vibration, and those are the usual reasons to shop here.
The sub-categories follow the path of the power. Clutch Parts & Kits and Final & Primary Drive Parts & Kits cover the clutch, drive belts, chains and sprockets, and driveshafts. Gearbox & Transmission Parts, Gaskets & Seals, Differential Parts and Bearings cover the gearbox, the differentials and the seals and bearings in them. At the wheels, CV Axle Assemblies, Axles and CV Joints, Boots & Parts cover the shafts and their joints, and Axle Housings & Parts and Other Transmission & Drivetrain Parts cover what is left.
Almost everything here is specific to a machine. Listings name the make, model and years, the position, such as front or rear and left or right, and sometimes the engine. Standard replacement parts and heavy-duty versions are both listed for some parts. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page, and if you are unsure what to match, read why your part did not fit and how to avoid it.
Brands in this section include Comet, EPI, EBC, Barnett and Dynojet. The full vehicle section is UTV | ATV.
FAQs on UTV and ATV drivetrain parts
How do primary drive and final drive differ?
Primary drive is the first link between the engine and the transmission or clutch. Final drive is the last link that carries power to the wheels, which can be a chain and sprockets, a belt or a shaft. Parts for both are listed under Final & Primary Drive Parts & Kits.
What does a whining or growling noise from the drivetrain mean?
A whine or growl that changes with speed often points to a worn bearing or gear wear in a differential or gearcase. Check the fluid level and condition first, then have the unit inspected. Your service manual describes how to check play and what is acceptable for your model.
Which drivetrain parts should be replaced together?
Clutch friction plates and springs are normally replaced as a set, and a chain and both sprockets are usually changed together. Bearings and seals in a differential are replaced together as well. Axles can be replaced one at a time, but inspect the others when one fails.
How do I find the right drivetrain fluid?
Look in the owner's manual for the fluid type and capacity of each unit. The engine, transmission and differentials can use different fluids, and some machines call for a specific front differential fluid. Do not guess, and drain and refill when the manual says.
How do I make sure a drivetrain part fits my model?
Match the year, make and model, then the position and side shown in the listing. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page to filter the results. If your machine had a running change in a model year, compare the old part to the listing.
