About Handlebar Guards & Protection

Handguards sit in front of your hands and levers to block branches, flying rocks, mud and wind, and to take the first hit if the machine goes down. Riders add them for trail and woods riding, to replace a pair that cracked in a crash, or to finish a bar setup after changing grips or levers.

Start with the handlebar. The listings here include handguards for 7/8 inch bars and for 1-1/8 inch oversized bars, so measure your bar before ordering. Most guards attach with a mount that clamps at the bar end and near the lever, and some are sold as a guard only with the mount as a separate part, like the Tri-Mount Star Series handguard mount. A wraparound shape covers more of the lever and knuckles, while a plain shield is lighter and simpler to fit. Many guards come in colors to match the plastics, so check the color in the title.

Handguards in this category come from brands including Domino, UFO, Acerbis, Cycra and Powermadd. For protection lower on the machine, see Skid Plates, Sliders & Spools, Frame & Crash Protectors and Engine Guards, all part of Guards & Protection.

FAQs on ATV handguards

How do I know which handguards fit my ATV handlebars?

Measure the diameter of your handlebar. Common sizes are 7/8 inch and 1-1/8 inch, and each listing says which size the guard is made for. Also check that the mount works with your lever perches and bar ends, and read the product notes for your model.

Do handguards keep my hands warm?

Handguards cut the wind and spray that hit your hands, so they take some of the chill off a cold ride. They are not heated and do not replace good gloves. A wider wraparound style blocks more air than a small shield.

Do handguards protect brake and clutch levers in a crash?

They help. A guard takes glancing hits from brush, rocks and the ground, and it keeps the lever from being the first thing to strike. It cannot prevent every bent or broken lever, so carry a spare on long rides in remote areas.

Can I install handguards myself?

Usually, with basic hand tools. Fit the mount at the bar end or lever area, set the guard at an angle that clears the full lever travel, and tighten the hardware. Then turn the bars lock to lock and confirm the throttle and levers move freely.
