Timing Components & Kits

About Timing Components & Kits

Timing components link the crankshaft to the camshaft so the valves open and close in step with the piston. On most UTV and ATV four-stroke engines that is a chain, with a tensioner to keep it tight and sprockets at each end. A stretched chain or weak tensioner shows up as a rattle from the top of the engine, and left alone it can throw off valve timing.

This group divides the job into three parts. Timing Belts & Chains covers the chain itself, listed by series code and link count, such as 92RH2015 x 114 links, plus a drive belt for older Polaris models. Tensioners & Pulleys holds the cam chain tensioners, some of them manual. Sprockets includes cam sprockets, such as a vernier type for adjusting cam timing. When one of these is worn, look at the others: a chain that has stretched has usually worn its sprockets, and a failing tensioner lets the chain slap.

Brands in this category include D.I.D, Hot Rods, Parts Unlimited, PSR and S&S Cycle. Chain length, series and tensioner type differ by engine, so pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. Timing work needs the service manual's marks and procedure. You will probably also want Gaskets, Seals & Kits and Engine Rebuild Kits & Components from the parent group, Engines & Engine Parts.

FAQs on UTV and ATV timing components

What does a cam chain tensioner do?

A cam chain tensioner keeps tension on the timing chain so it does not slap or skip a tooth as the engine speeds up and slows down. When it weakens, the chain gets slack. That causes noise and can upset valve timing.

How do I choose the right cam chain?

Match the series code and the number of links to your engine, both shown in the listing, such as 92RH2010 x 114 links. The same series can be sold in many lengths, so the link count matters. Use the Ride Finder or your manual to confirm.

Should I replace the cam chain, tensioner and sprockets together?

Often it is worth doing. A stretched chain wears the sprockets, and a worn tensioner shortens the life of a new chain. Inspect all three when the engine is open, then replace what shows wear. Follow the service manual for the timing marks.

What are the signs of a worn timing chain?

A rattling or ticking from the top of the engine, especially at startup or idle, is the most common sign. It can mean a stretched chain or a tired tensioner. Have it checked soon, since timing problems can damage valves and other parts.

What is the difference between a roller and a silent cam chain?

A roller chain has rollers around its pins. A silent chain is built from toothed link plates and runs more quietly. Use the type your engine was designed for, since the sprockets are made to suit one style.
