Water Pumps
About Water Pumps
The water pump moves coolant through the engine and radiator. Its impeller turns on a shaft that is sealed against leaks, and the seal and bearing are the parts that wear out. Owners shop here when coolant drips from the pump's drain or weep hole, when coolant and oil mix, when the pump makes noise, or when the engine overheats with a good fan and thermostat.
Most listings here are rebuild or repair kits rather than complete pumps. They usually include the seals and bearings, and some include the shaft or impeller, so check the listing for what is in the kit and what you must reuse. An impeller and waterpump cover is also listed. Kits are sold by make, with Yamaha, Polaris, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Can-Am and KTM examples. Replace the pump gaskets, drain and refill the coolant, and bleed the air. If coolant has mixed with the oil, change the oil and filter as well.
Brands in this category include Hot Rods, Vertex, Prox, Moose Offroad and Quad Logic. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. While the system is open, consider Pipes & Hoses, Thermostats & Housings and Radiator & Coolant Reservoir Caps, all part of Engine Cooling.
FAQs on water pumps and rebuild kits
What does a water pump rebuild kit include?
Most kits include the seals and bearings that wear out, and some add the shaft or impeller. The contents vary between makers and machines, so read the listing and compare the kit with your pump. Your manual shows which parts the pump has.
How do I know if my water pump has failed?
Signs include coolant dripping from the pump's weep or drain hole, a grinding or whining noise from the pump, overheating that the fan and thermostat do not explain, and milky oil. Check the coolant level and look for residue around the pump.
Can a leaking water pump seal put coolant in the oil?
Yes. On many engines, a failed pump seal can let coolant pass into the oil, which turns it milky. Stop riding, change the oil and filter, and replace the seals, because coolant in the oil does not lubricate properly.
Do I need new gaskets when I rebuild a water pump?
Yes, use new gaskets or seals wherever the pump cover or housing is opened. Reused gaskets can leak. Clean the mating surfaces carefully, tighten the bolts evenly to the specification in your manual, and check for leaks once the system is refilled.
