About Ignition Coils

The ignition coil steps up the voltage so the spark plug can jump its gap and light the mixture. A coil that weakens with age and heat causes a misfire, hard starting or a no-spark condition.

The listings include ATV ignition coils for models such as the Honda FourTrax Rincon, Honda Pioneer 700, Polaris Sportsman and Trail Boss, Yamaha YFZ450 and Kawasaki Teryx, along with Hot Shot coils for Honda and Yamaha, a stick coil for the RZR, and coil kits for Suzuki. A stick coil sits directly on the spark plug with no plug wire, while a conventional coil sends the spark through a lead. An ATV pickup coil is also listed. It is a separate part, so read each title. Match the coil to the model and year, and compare the resistance with the figures in your service manual.

Brands here include Bronco, Dynojet, RM Stator, Dynatek and Emgo. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. Check Spark Plugs & Glow Plugs when you change a coil, and see ECUs, CDIs & Computer Modules and Stators & Magnetos for the other ignition parts. The whole group is Electrical & Ignition Components.

FAQs on UTV and ATV ignition coils

What are the signs of a failing ignition coil?

Common signs are a misfire under load, hard starting and a weak or missing spark. Heat can make a failing coil worse, so the problem may come and go. These symptoms also match a worn plug or a bad CDI, so test before replacing.

How do I test an ignition coil?

Use a multimeter to measure the primary and secondary resistance and compare the readings with the figures in your service manual. You can also check for spark at the plug. If your machine has more than one cylinder, comparing coils can help. If unsure, ask a shop.

What is a stick coil?

A stick coil mounts directly over the spark plug, with no plug wire between them. The RZR listing is an example. A conventional coil sits elsewhere on the machine and sends the spark through a plug lead.

Is a pickup coil the same as an ignition coil?

No. A pickup coil sends a timing signal to the ignition unit, while the ignition coil produces the high-voltage spark. Both are listed in this category, so read the title and fitment to make sure you have the one you need.

Should I replace the spark plug when I replace a coil?

Inspect the plug. A worn or fouled plug makes the coil work harder, so replace it if it is worn, and set the gap as your manual describes. A new coil on a bad plug can fail early.
