ECUs, CDIs & Computer Modules
About ECUs, CDIs & Computer Modules
The CDI box or ECU is the electronic unit that times the spark, and on fuel-injected machines it also controls fuel. When one fails, the machine can lose spark, misfire or stop running, and the fault can look like a bad coil or stator.
The listings cover three kinds of part. CDI boxes, including Hot Shot units, are listed for Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Polaris machines. Power Vision 3 ECU tuners are listed for Polaris, Can-Am and Honda Pioneer models. A tuner connects to the machine's ECU so you can change its settings, so check your local emissions rules and the listing's intended use. Replacement fuel pump module kits for models such as the Kawasaki Teryx, Polaris Sportsman and Yamaha Raptor 700 also appear here. Match each part to the exact model and year with the Ride Finder at the top of the page.
Brands here include Dynojet, All Balls, RM Stator, Trinity Racing and Dynatek. When a machine has no spark, also check Ignition Coils, Stators & Magnetos and Wiring Harnesses, Cables & Connectors. The whole group is Electrical & Ignition Components.
FAQs on CDI boxes, ECUs and tuners
What is the difference between a CDI box and an ECU?
A CDI box typically handles ignition timing and spark on simpler, often carbureted machines. An ECU is a computer that controls ignition and, on fuel-injected machines, the fuel as well. Which one your machine has depends on the model.
How do I know whether the CDI box has failed?
A CDI failure usually shows up as no spark or an erratic spark. Because the coil, the stator and the wiring can cause the same symptom, test them first as your service manual describes. Replace the CDI when the other parts check out.
What does an ECU tuner do?
A tuner connects to a fuel-injected machine's ECU and lets you read and change its tuning settings. Listings here are for Polaris, Can-Am and Honda models. Read the listing for what it does on your machine, and check local emissions rules.
Why are fuel pump module kits listed in this category?
Listings for replacement fuel pump module kits for models such as the Teryx, Sportsman and Raptor 700 appear here. They are fuel system parts and not ignition parts, so read the title and fitment before ordering.
Should I disconnect the battery before changing a CDI or ECU?
Yes. Turn the ignition off and disconnect the battery before unplugging an electronic unit. Handle it carefully, because shocks damage electronics, and make sure the connectors are clean and fully seated when you refit it.
