About Electrical & Ignition Components

A UTV or ATV electrical system has three main jobs: it starts the engine, it fires the spark, and it charges the battery that powers everything else. Owners shop this group when a machine will not crank, cranks but will not start, or runs the battery flat.

Starting and charging are the first place to look. Batteries store the power, and Starter Motors and Starter Motor Parts turn the engine over. Stators & Magnetos and Stator & Magneto Parts generate electricity while the engine runs, and Voltage Regulators & Rectifiers convert it to a steady direct current for the battery and the machine.

Ignition is next. Ignition Coils raise the voltage for the spark, Spark Plugs & Glow Plugs light the mixture in gas engines and help start diesels, and ECUs, CDIs & Computer Modules time the spark and on some machines control fuel. Distributor Parts serve older systems. Circuit parts include Fuses & Fuse Boxes, Relays, Wiring Harnesses, Cables & Connectors, Horns & Horn Covers and Sensors & Switches. Other Electrical & Ignition Components holds the rest.

Brands here include Bronco, NGK Spark Plugs, Parts Unlimited, Denso and Dynojet. Electrical parts differ by model and engine, so pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. If a part did not fit last time, read why parts do not fit and how to avoid it.

FAQs on UTV and ATV electrical and ignition parts

How can I tell a bad battery from a charging problem?

A battery that is weak after sitting but then holds a charge may simply be old. If it goes flat after riding, the charging system, meaning the stator and the regulator or rectifier, may be at fault. Measure the voltage with the engine off and again while running, and compare it with your manual.

Which part makes the electricity on an ATV?

The stator or magneto generates alternating current while the engine runs. The regulator and rectifier convert it to direct current and keep the voltage steady, and the battery stores power for starting and for when the engine is off.

What should I check if the engine cranks but will not start?

Check for spark at the plug first, then look at the plug, the ignition coil, the CDI or ECU and the fuses. Fuel and air problems cause the same symptom, so check those too. Follow the troubleshooting steps in your service manual.

How do I find the right electrical part for my model?

Pick your machine in the Ride Finder, then compare the make, model, year and engine in the listing. Many electrical parts differ by engine and by year, even within one model line, so check before ordering.
