Switches
About Switches
A switch is the control you touch to turn an accessory on or off, and one rated too low for the load can overheat or fail. Riders replace burnt or sticky switches, add controls for new lights, and rebuild dashes with labeled, lit rockers.
The style is usually a rocker or a toggle. Rocker switches come as standard or lighted, and a backlit Pro Series type is listed with labels such as aux 1, light bar, bumper LED, roof LED, dome light, turn signal and horn. There is also a DRL three-position switch, a toggle switch rated at 20 amps, and rocker switches with a harness and connector. Mount plates hold several switches together, such as a six-switch plate for the Honda Talon. Check the amp rating against the load and use a fuse. A kill button for Honda XR models also appears. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page for model-specific kits.
Brands here include Flip, Grote, Fire Power, XTC Power Products and Open Trail. These switches belong to the wider group Electric ATV, SxS & UTV Parts. If a switch does not fit the opening on your dash, read why parts do not fit and how to avoid it before ordering again.
FAQs on rocker and toggle switches
What is the difference between a rocker switch and a toggle switch?
A rocker switch is a flat panel switch that you press on one side or the other, and it mounts in a rectangular cutout. A toggle switch has a lever that you flip. Rockers are often lighted. Choose by the opening on your dash and the amp rating.
How do I know a switch can handle my accessory?
Compare the amp rating on the switch with the current the accessory draws, which is on the accessory's label or instructions. If the load is high, use the switch to trigger a relay instead of carrying the current itself.
What is a switch mount plate?
A mount plate is a panel with cutouts that holds one or more switches in a neat row and bolts to the dash. Plates are often made for a particular model, such as the six-switch plate listed here for the Honda Talon.
How do I install a rocker switch safely?
Disconnect the negative battery cable first. Cut the opening to the size the switch needs, connect it as the instructions show, with power taken through a fuse, and test it before putting the dash back together.
Can a switch made for one machine be used on another?
A basic rocker or toggle works wherever the opening and rating suit it. Kits with a harness, or switches listed for a Polaris, Yamaha or Honda model, are made for that machine's connectors, so match the model in the listing.
