About Cleaning & Detailing

Mud, dust and trail grit wear down a UTV or ATV faster than most owners realize, and a clean machine is easier to inspect for leaks, cracks and loose fasteners. Riders shop here for a wash, a degreaser for the drivetrain, a filter cleaner for the air filter, and a detailing spray to finish.

Pick the product for the job. A vehicle wash lifts mud and dirt from paint and plastics, a heavy-duty degreaser breaks down oil and grease around the engine and drivetrain, and a quick detailer adds shine after washing. Air filter cleaner is made for foam and oiled filters, which must be dried fully and re-oiled afterward. Brake and parts cleaner, such as the one listed here, is for metal brake and drivetrain parts, and it can harm some plastics and rubber, so keep it off tires and seals. Use a gentle spray with a pressure washer, and keep it away from wheel bearings, electrical connectors and the air intake.

Brands in this category include Lucas, Permatex, Sta-Bil, Muc-Off and Motul. See also Chemicals & Lube, Misc. Accessories and the parent group Accessories. Cleaning supplies do not depend on your model, but always follow the label.

FAQs on washing and cleaning a UTV or ATV

Can I use a pressure washer on a UTV or ATV?

Yes, with care. Keep the nozzle back, use a wide spray, and avoid wheel bearings, hubs, electrical connectors, the air intake and exhaust outlet, because water forced into them causes damage. Let the machine dry, then run it briefly to drive off remaining moisture.

How do I clean a foam air filter?

Wash it in a cleaner made for foam filters, rinse it with water, squeeze out the water without twisting, and let it dry completely. Then work filter oil in evenly and squeeze out the excess. Follow the instructions on the cleaner and oil you use.

Is brake cleaner safe on every part of my machine?

No. It is made for metal brake and drivetrain parts, and it can harm some plastics, rubber and paint. Use it in a ventilated area, keep it away from tires, seals and bushings, and let the part dry before you reassemble it.

When should I use a degreaser instead of a wash?

Use a degreaser where oil and grease have built up, such as around the engine, chain, skid plate and drivetrain. A wash is for general mud and dirt on bodywork. Rinse degreaser off thoroughly, and keep it off brake discs and pads.

Should I wash my UTV or ATV after riding in mud or salt?

Yes, as soon as you reasonably can. Packed mud holds moisture against metal and hides damage, and salt speeds up corrosion. Rinse the frame, suspension, wheels and underside, then dry the machine and lubricate the points your manual lists.
