About Chemicals & Lube

Oils, fluids and sealants are one of the simplest ways to extend the life of a UTV or ATV, and a wrong choice here can do real harm. Riders shop here for an oil change, a gear or fork oil refresh, fresh brake fluid, fuel additives and the threadlocker or sealant that finishes a repair.

Choose by system and match the manual. Engine oil is graded by viscosity such as 10W-40 and by specification. Gear oil and front-drive fluids are made for differentials and chaincases, and fork oil is sold by weight, such as 5W. Brake fluid must be the DOT type printed on the reservoir cap, and silicone DOT 5 should not be mixed with the glycol types, DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1.

Oil change kits are listed for specific machines, like the Can-Am Maverick X3 and Honda Talon kits here, so read what each includes. Threadlockers come in strengths, with red gel the permanent type, and sealants and gasket makers are made for particular temperatures and surfaces. Fuel products such as injector cleaner are used as the label directs.

Brands in this category include Fox, DEI, Helix, Lucas and DRC. Related groups are Cleaning & Detailing and Misc. Accessories, and the full set is under Accessories. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page for model-specific kits.

FAQs on UTV and ATV oil, fluids and threadlocker

What does 10W-40 on a bottle of oil mean?

It is the viscosity grade. The number before the W describes how the oil flows when cold, and the number after it describes thickness at operating temperature. Use the grade your machine's manual lists, and match the specification as well as the number.

Can I mix different brake fluids?

Use the fluid type printed on the brake reservoir cap or in your manual. DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are glycol-based, while DOT 5 is silicone-based and must not be mixed with the others. Keep the container sealed, and replace the fluid at the interval in your manual.

What is the difference between red and blue threadlocker?

Red threadlocker is a high-strength type meant for permanent fasteners and usually needs heat to remove. Blue is a medium strength that can be undone with hand tools. Read the product label, and choose the strength that suits the part and whether you will need to remove it.

What is in a UTV oil change kit?

Contents differ by kit, so read the listing. The kits here are listed for particular machines, such as the Can-Am Maverick X3 and the Honda Talon. Check that the kit matches your model and year, and compare what it includes with what your manual calls for.

How often should I change the oil in my UTV or ATV?

Follow the interval in your owner's manual, which is usually given in hours, distance or months, whichever comes first. Machines used in dust, mud, water or heavy loads may need earlier changes, so shorten the interval if the manual says to for severe use.
