About Windshields

A windshield is the main thing between a snowmobile rider and the wind, and it is also one of the parts most often cracked by a fall, a branch or a scratched-up season. Riders shop here to replace a damaged one, to switch to a taller or lower shape, or to change the tint.

Height is the main choice. The listings give it in inches, from low shields around 9 or 13.5 inches to taller ones near 20, and the words low, mid and high appear on some. A taller shield cuts more wind and snow from your chest and face, while a lower one gives a clearer view over the top and less distortion.

Smoke tint reduces glare on bright snow, and clear gives the least distortion in flat light and at night. Windshields are cut for particular makes and often a model range, such as Polaris, Ski-Doo, Yamaha and Arctic Cat, so check yours, and mounting hardware like windshield straps is sold in packs.

Brands in this category include SP1, Kimpex, Powermadd and Sno Stuff. See also Lighting, Handlebars & Mirrors and Body Parts. Pick your sled in the Ride Finder at the top of the page.

FAQs on snowmobile windshields

What height windshield should I choose for my snowmobile?

A taller windshield blocks more wind and snow and suits cold-weather riding, while a lower one gives a clearer view over the top and less distortion. Mid heights sit between. Your own height and the way you ride matter, so check the shield height listed in inches.

Is a smoke or clear windshield better?

Smoke tint cuts glare when the sun is on bright snow. Clear gives the least distortion and the most light in flat light and at night. Pick the one that suits the conditions you ride in most, and keep a clear shield for night riding.

Will a windshield from a different model year fit my sled?

Not always. Windshields are cut to a model's mounting pattern, and the pattern can change between years. Check that the make and years in the listing include your sled, and use the Ride Finder to narrow the list.

How can I avoid cracking a new windshield?

Tighten the fasteners snug but not hard, because overtightening puts stress on the plastic around the holes. Cold plastic is more brittle, so mount it carefully in a warm place, and use the right washers and straps. Check it for stress cracks before long rides.

How do I clean a snowmobile windshield without scratching it?

Rinse off dirt and grit first, then wipe with a soft cloth and plenty of water or a cleaner made for plastic. Avoid dry wiping and household glass cleaners with ammonia, which can scratch or cloud the plastic.
