About Guards & Guides

Chain guides, sliders and rollers keep the chain running straight and stop it chewing into the swingarm, and they are parts meant to wear and be replaced. Riders shop here for a thinned slider or worn guide block, a broken guide, a color to match the bike, or a belt guard.

The samples are mostly dirt bike parts. Complete guide blocks, guide and slider kits, sliders, rollers and wear blocks with hardware are listed by model, such as the RM-Z 250/450, CRF150R, CRF250R/450R, KTM, Yamaha and Gas Gas, in black, orange, blue and other colors. There is also a Road Star belt guard. A slider rides against the chain and wears away, so replace it before it is worn through. Check guides for grooves and cracks, and renew the hardware that comes with the kit.

Brands here include UFO, Cobra, Helix, Drag Specialties and Acerbis. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. See Final Drive Belts & Chains, Sprockets and Final Drive Kits for the rest of the final drive, all part of Final & Primary Drive Parts & Kits.

FAQs on chain guides and sliders

What does a chain slider do?

A chain slider is a wear piece on the swingarm that the chain runs against. It protects the swingarm from being cut by the chain and wears away in its place, so it is replaced when it gets thin. Sliders are cut for particular models.

How can I tell if my chain guide is worn?

Look for deep grooves, thin spots, cracks or chain marks cut into the guide, and for slop where it mounts. If the chain can touch bare metal, replace the guide. Check it whenever you replace the chain.

Is a chain guide the same as a chain guard?

No. A guide or slider rides against the chain to hold its path and protect the swingarm. A guard or belt guard covers the drive to keep hands, clothing and debris away from moving parts. They do different jobs.

Do I replace chain guides with a new chain?

Inspect them at the same time. A new chain on a worn guide can wear faster or run off line. If the guide or slider is thin or grooved, renew it with the chain, and fit the hardware that comes with the kit.

Will an aftermarket chain guide fit my bike?

Only if the listing names your model and year. Guides and sliders are shaped for specific swingarms and mounts, so similar-looking bikes may need different parts. Use the Ride Finder to check, and read the listing to see whether the hardware is included.
