Complete Clutches & Kits
About Complete Clutches & Kits
A complete clutch or clutch kit bundles the parts that wear together, so one purchase covers the rebuild. Riders buy one when the clutch slips, when a full service is due, or to fit an upgraded clutch built for harder use.
Contents vary, so read the listing for what is included. Some kits hold friction plates, steel plates and springs, others are complete clutch assemblies for one model, and a few listings are related tools. Kits are listed by model, from Harley-Davidson M8 and BMW to dirt bikes such as the CR125R, RMZ 250 and CRF250R, plus Husqvarna and KTM models. Upgrade kits may use different friction materials, which can change lever feel and engagement, so read the maker's notes. Whichever you choose, plan on a new cover gasket and fresh oil, and check the basket, hub and cable while the clutch is open.
Brands here include Athena, Comet, DEI, EPI and EBC. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. To buy parts one at a time instead, see Clutch Plates & Discs, Clutch Springs, Clutch Baskets & Hubs and Clutch Covers, all part of Clutch Parts & Kits.
FAQs on complete clutch kits
What is usually included in a motorcycle clutch kit?
It depends on the kit. Many include friction plates and steel plates, and some add springs or a pressure plate, while complete clutch assemblies replace more of the pack. Read the listing to see what is in the box, and note what you may still need, such as a gasket.
Is a clutch kit better than buying plates and springs separately?
A kit saves matching parts and suits a full rebuild when plates and springs are both worn. Buy parts separately when only one item needs replacing, such as a set of friction plates, or when you want to choose a particular friction material.
What else should I replace when fitting a clutch kit?
Check the basket and hub for notches, the cable or hydraulic system for wear, and fit a new cover gasket. Measure everything against the service manual limits. Parts that look fine but are out of limit can make a new kit slip or drag.
Do I need new oil after a clutch job?
On most bikes with a wet clutch, the cover is full of oil, so it is drained before the cover comes off and refilled afterward. Use the oil type and amount in your manual, then check for leaks after warming the engine.
Will an upgraded clutch kit change the lever feel?
It can. Different friction materials and springs change how the clutch engages and how hard the lever pulls, and the maker's notes describe the effect. If you want a stock feel, a replacement kit made to stock specification is the safer match.
