About Clutch Covers

The clutch cover closes the engine case over the clutch, keeps the oil in and the dirt out, and on a dirt bike takes a lot of abuse in falls. Harley-style primary housings use a round derby cover, which the samples list for Touring, Trike, Softail and Big Twin models. Riders replace a cracked or leaking cover, or fit a different finish.

Fit comes first. Covers are listed for one machine or family of machines, such as Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Triumph, Husqvarna and KTM engines, and a cover from another year may not match. Dirt bike covers come in the original finish or another color, and one sample is magnesium, which is lighter than aluminum. Derby covers come in chrome, black and wrinkle black, some with a clear window. Buy the gasket if the cover does not include one, and refill the oil to the level the manual gives after fitting.

Brands here include Covingtons, Drag Specialties, Barnett, Arlen Ness and Acerbis. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. What sits under the cover is in Clutch Baskets & Hubs, Clutch Plates & Discs and Clutch Cables, all part of Clutch Parts & Kits.

FAQs on motorcycle clutch covers

What is a derby cover?

A derby cover is the round cover on the clutch side of a Harley-style primary housing. It keeps the primary fluid in and gives access to the clutch when it is removed. Covers are sold in chrome and black finishes, some with a clear window, and each is specific to a model family.

Do I need a new gasket when I change a clutch cover?

Yes, plan on a fresh gasket. Old ones are crushed and rarely reseal well. Clean both mating surfaces without gouging them, then tighten the cover bolts in a crisscross pattern to the torque in the service manual.

Is a magnesium clutch cover better than an aluminum one?

Magnesium is lighter, which is why some riders choose it, but it can corrode if the finish is scratched or worn. Neither is better in general, so pick the cover listed for your machine and keep the coating in good shape.

What should I do after fitting a new clutch cover?

Refill the oil to the level in the manual, start the engine, and check for leaks at the cover joint once it is warm. Then check the lever feel and free play before you ride.

Can I use a clutch cover from a different model year?

Only if the listing says it fits. Covers can change between model years, so one that looks right may not match the case or the way the clutch is operated. Use the Ride Finder to check your machine.
