Luggage, Racks & Storage

About Luggage, Racks & Storage

Carrying gear on a motorcycle comes down to where the weight sits and how it attaches, so this section is organized by position: beside the rear wheel, behind the seat, on the tank and on a rack. Riders shop here to add storage for commuting, to prepare for a long trip, or to replace a worn latch, lid or support on bags they already own.

Saddlebags and panniers hang on either side of the rear wheel and hold the most gear; they are listed in Saddlebags & Panniers. Top cases and tail bags ride behind the seat in Top Boxes & Tail Bags. A tank bag puts small items within reach, and its rings and mounts are in Tank Bags & Flanges. Many cases and bags need a platform to sit on, which is what Luggage Racks provide. Hard cases lock and resist weather and impact, while soft bags are lighter and easier to store. Keep heavy items low and close to the center of the bike, load both sides evenly, and stay within the load limit in your owner's manual.

Brands listed here include MUSTANG, ATLANTIS, COBRA, COVINGTONS and Drag Specialties. Mounts, supports and brackets are usually made for one model, so pick your bike in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. Everything else is in Other Luggage, Racks & Storage. Our guide to avoiding fitment mistakes is worth a read before you order mounting hardware.

FAQs on motorcycle luggage, racks and storage

How much can I carry on my motorcycle?

Your owner's manual gives the maximum load, which covers the rider, any passenger, luggage and accessories together. Each rack and bag also has its own rating, and the lowest limit is the one to follow. Weigh what you plan to carry if you are close.

Will saddlebags fit any motorcycle?

No. Most bags depend on model-specific supports, brackets or carriers, and the shape of the tail section and exhaust decides what fits. Check the listed make, model and years, and use the Ride Finder to narrow the list.

Should I choose hard cases or soft bags?

Hard cases lock, hold their shape and protect contents well, but they are heavier and need a firm mount. Soft bags are lighter, cost less to fit and can come off easily, though they are less secure and need a cover or liner in rain.

How should I pack a motorcycle so it stays stable?

Put the heaviest items low and close to the seat, keep the weight the same on both sides, and strap everything down so nothing shifts. Check tire pressure and rear suspension preload for a loaded bike in your manual.

Can I use more than one type of luggage on the same bike?

Often yes, for example a tank bag with saddlebags and a top case. Make sure the combined load stays inside the bike's rating, the bags do not touch the exhaust or block the lights and that the seat, lids and controls still work freely.
