About Sockets, Connectors & Wiring
Many lighting faults are not the bulb at all but a corroded socket, a loose connector or a wiring harness that no longer reaches after a handlebar, fender or signal change. This is where riders find the plugs, harnesses, sockets and control modules that connect lights to the bike.
Sort the part by what it does. A headlight socket or bulb socket replaces a burnt or melted holder. An extension harness, such as the 12 inch and 15 inch front turn signal versions, lets a signal sit farther from its plug. A model-specific wiring adapter lets new lights plug into the factory connector without cutting wires, and a splitter feeds several lamps from one connection.
Modules such as an auto-cancel turn signal module or a reverse light controller add a function. Match the plug shape, the number of pins and the model year, because factory connectors change between years. For lights that draw real current, use a fuse, and protect outdoor connections with heat-shrink and a dab of dielectric grease.
Brands listed here include PATHFINDER, CIRO, Custom Dynamics, Memphis Shades and Optronics Inc.. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page to narrow the harnesses to your model. The lamps these parts feed are in Turn Signal Light Assemblies, Headlight Assemblies and Light Bulbs & LEDs, part of Lighting & Lamps.
FAQs on motorcycle lighting sockets, connectors and wiring
How do I know which wiring harness fits my motorcycle?
Look for your make, model and year in the listing, since connectors change from one year to the next. Compare the plug shape and pin count with the one on your bike. If you are unsure, pick your motorcycle in the Ride Finder and use the parts it shows.
Why would I need a turn signal extension harness?
You need one when a signal moves farther from its plug, for example after relocating front signals or changing handlebars. Measure the path from the plug to the new spot, add slack for steering movement, and choose a harness at least that long.
What does an auto-cancel turn signal module do?
It turns the signal off for you after a turn, so you do not have to press the switch. How it decides, by time, distance or steering movement, depends on the module, so read the listing and the instructions for your model.
How do I protect lighting connectors from corrosion?
Keep each plug fully seated, add a thin layer of dielectric grease inside the connector, and cover any splices with sealed heat-shrink. Clean green or white corrosion off terminals before you reconnect, and replace a plug whose pins are loose or burnt.
Can I splice wires if the new connector does not match?
You can, but a plug-in adapter harness is the safer option when one exists for your model. If you splice, use soldered or properly crimped joints, seal them with heat-shrink and fuse the circuit. A poor splice can fail or overheat.
