About Shift & Gear Levers

The shift lever is the part your boot hits on every gear change, so it takes the hit in a fall or a drop. Riders replace levers when they are bent or snapped, when the tip is worn, when they want a different length or reach, or when a custom foot control setup calls for a different part. On dirt bikes a lever that folds on impact is a common upgrade.

There are a few types. Dirt and enduro bikes use levers cut for the model and years, in forged, race and folding versions, and the listings here include Honda CRF, Kawasaki KX, Suzuki DR-Z, KTM and Husqvarna. Cruisers use shift levers, shifter pegs, such as the rail peg listed here, and shift linkage, which is the rod that connects the pedal to the transmission.

Linkage is sold by length, so match it to where your controls sit, especially after a mid-control or forward control kit. Levers fit on a splined shaft, so a lever made for another model may not slide on or may sit at the wrong angle. Set the lever so your toe reaches it easily and so it does not hit the peg or board at full travel. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page.

Brands in this category include Covingtons, Zeta, HardDrive, Ciro and Drag Specialties. If you are moving the controls, see Forward Controls & Relocation Kits and Rearsets, and for the other pedal see Foot Brake Levers & Pedals. FAQs on shift levers and linkage

What is the difference between a folding and a fixed shift lever?

A folding lever has a hinged tip that folds back when it hits something, then springs back. A fixed lever is rigid, so it is more likely to bend or break in a fall. Dirt riders often choose the folding type.

Can a bent shift lever be straightened?

A lever that has been bent and straightened can crack later, so replacing it is the safer choice. Replace any lever that is cracked or has been bent more than once, and check the shaft it mounts on.

How do I set the shift lever height?

Position the lever so your toe can get under it and press it without lifting your whole foot. Make sure it does not touch the peg, board or footrest through its full travel, and tighten it to the value in your manual.

Do shift levers fit every model?

No. The lever has to match the splined shift shaft and the bike's layout, so listings name the model and years. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page and compare.

What is shift linkage?

Shift linkage is the rod and its end joints that connect the shift pedal to the transmission's shift arm. Cruisers with forward or mid controls use it, and it is sold in set lengths, so match the length to your control position.
