Oil Pumps & Parts

About Oil Pumps & Parts

The oil pump moves oil from the sump or tank through the filter to the bearings, cams and valvetrain. Parts here are needed when pump gears or the housing wear, when oil pressure is low, or when an engine build is changed in a way that needs more flow than the stock pump gives.

The range runs from complete pumps to the small parts around them. Pump choices include stock-style replacements, billet pumps and high-volume, high-pressure kits for performance Harley-Davidson builds, with a Honda Grom 125 and Monkey pump listed too. A stock engine in good condition does not need a high-flow pump, so follow your engine builder's advice. Smaller items include pump drive gears, nut kits, cap washers, plug kits, rebuild kits and a gerotor feed for Twin Cam 88 and 96 engines. Match the engine family and year range, since pump parts differ between Big Twin, Sportster and Twin Cam. Some kits are listed as universal, so confirm they suit your engine before ordering.

Brands here include Colony, Jims, HardDrive, Drag Specialties, S&S Cycle and Feuling Parts. Related categories are Engine Bearings, Crankshafts and Engine Rebuild Kits & Components.

FAQs on motorcycle oil pumps

How do I know if the oil pump is the problem when oil pressure is low?

Check the oil level, the oil grade and the filter first, then measure pressure with a gauge as the service manual describes. Do not keep riding with the oil warning lamp on, because low pressure can damage the engine.

Do I need a high-volume oil pump for a stock engine?

Generally no. A healthy stock pump supplies a stock engine. High-flow pumps are aimed at modified engines, and the pump maker or your engine builder should tell you whether your build needs one. More flow is not automatically better.

Should I prime a new oil pump before installing it?

Many makers recommend filling or priming a pump with clean oil so it moves oil as soon as the engine turns. Follow the instructions that come with your pump, as the method differs between engines.

What is a gerotor oil pump?

A gerotor pump has an inner rotor that spins inside an outer ring, and the changing spaces between them draw oil in and push it out. It is a common compact design for engine oil pumps.

Should I rebuild or replace a worn oil pump?

If the housing and gears measure within the limits in the service manual, a rebuild kit can renew the worn small parts. If the housing or gears are worn past the limits, replace the pump.
