Engine Mounts

About Engine Mounts

Motor mounts are the brackets, studs and bolts that tie the engine to the frame. On many motorcycles the engine is part of the structure, so a loose, cracked or missing mount shows up as clunking, extra vibration or an engine that moves under power. Riders replace mounts after damage, during a rebuild, or when restoring an older bike.

Start with the position and the model. Listings are separated into front, rear, upper and lower mounts and are named by engine and frame, such as Shovelhead, Evolution, Dyna, Softail, FLT, Sportster (XL) and some Polaris applications. Some items are single mounts and others are kits with studs or bolts, so look at what the listing includes. Finishes include chrome for a custom look and cadmium or parkerized for original-style hardware on older bikes. When you replace mounts, replace the bolts too, and follow the service manual for the tightening order, since engine mounts affect alignment.

Brands in this category include Colony, Drag Specialties, Parts Unlimited, Custom Cycle Engineering and Eastern Motorcycle Parts. For other fasteners and brackets, see Brackets & Hardware, and for an engine swap, Complete Engines.

FAQs on motorcycle engine mounts

What are the signs of a worn or loose motor mount?

A clunk when you open or close the throttle or shift, more vibration than usual, an engine that visibly shifts, or a cracked bracket or rubber. Inspect the mounts and bolts if you notice any of these.

How should the engine be supported when changing a mount?

Use a jack or lift stand under the engine or frame as the service manual shows, so the weight is held while bolts are out. Loosen and tighten the mounts in the order the manual gives.

What is the difference between cadmium, parkerized and chrome mounts?

Cadmium and parkerized finishes are meant to look like original factory hardware on older bikes, while chrome is a show finish. They do not change how the mount fits, so check the model and year before choosing a finish.

Do I need new bolts when I replace motor mounts?

It is a good idea, and some listings are kits that include bolts or studs. Old hardware that is stretched, rusted or damaged should not go back in, because it holds the engine in the frame.

Will Dyna motor mounts fit a Softail?

No. Mounts are made for a specific frame and engine pairing, which is why the listings say Dyna, Softail, FLT or XL. Match the model and year, or use the Ride Finder at the top of the page.
