About Stator & Magneto Parts

On a motorcycle with a magneto or a flywheel alternator, the stator is the set of coils that makes the electricity, and a rotor or flywheel carrying magnets spins around or past it. The cover that closes this area is sealed with a gasket. Riders shop here for the gaskets needed when a cover comes off, for a replacement flywheel rotor, and for the parts that restore charging or ignition after a failure.

Decide first what has failed. A stator cover or stator gasket is a seal that you replace any time the cover is removed, since a reused gasket can leak oil. A stator or flywheel rotor is the electrical part. Kits, such as the stator, regulator and ignition coil kit for Polaris, group the related pieces so you can change them together. The listings here also include parts for Harley-Davidson Sportster and touring models, and for Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Triumph and Ski-Doo machines. Each part is specific to an engine and year range, so match the title to your machine. If the battery is not charging, test the stator and regulator against your service manual before buying.

Brands in this category include Jims, Drag Specialties, Cometic, RM Stator and Moose Offroad. Related categories are Alternators & Generators, Alternator & Generator Parts and Ignition Coils. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page for parts that match it.

FAQs on stator and magneto parts

What does a stator do on a motorcycle?

The stator is a ring of wire coils. As the flywheel or rotor with its magnets spins around it, the coils produce alternating current. That power charges the battery through a regulator and runs the lights and electrical parts. On some engines it also supplies ignition power.

What are the symptoms of a bad stator?

Typical signs are a battery that will not stay charged, dim lights and a bike that stalls or will not start after a ride. A multimeter test of the stator windings and the charging output, compared with your manual's figures, will confirm it.

Do I need a new gasket when I remove the stator cover?

Yes, it is the safer choice. The gasket seals engine oil inside the case and can tear or flatten when the cover is removed. Fitting a new one, with clean mating surfaces, lowers the chance of a leak.

What is a flywheel rotor?

The flywheel rotor is the heavy wheel on the end of the crankshaft that carries the magnets. It spins around the stator to generate power and keeps the engine turning smoothly. It is listed by model and years, so match it carefully.

Should I replace the regulator when I replace the stator?

Test it. A faulty regulator can lead to overcharging or heat that harms a stator, and a failed stator can mask regulator trouble. When you replace one, have the other checked against your service manual so the new part is not damaged.
