Ignition Wires, Caps & Boots
About Ignition Wires, Caps & Boots
Ignition wires carry the high-voltage spark from the coil to the spark plug, and the caps and boots seal that connection against dirt and moisture. When the insulation cracks or the ends corrode, the spark can leak, and the bike may miss, run roughly or struggle to start, especially in wet weather. Riders replace them for those faults, and some choose braided or colored wires for appearance.
Wire sets come in two forms. Model-specific sets, such as the braided sets for Harley-Davidson Softail and Sportster models, are cut to the right length with the correct ends. Universal wire is sold by the length or as a set that you cut and fit yourself, which suits custom builds. Wire diameter, shown in millimeters in the listing, such as 8 mm or 10.4 mm, affects appearance and has to work with the boots and caps you use. Boots may be straight or angled, so match them to the plug and coil connection. The category also lists connectors and sleeves for the low-voltage wiring.
Brands in this category include DEI, HardDrive, Ciro, Drag Specialties and ACCEL. When you change wires, check the Spark Plugs and the Ignition Coils at the other end. Ignition Kits are also close by. Pick your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page for model-specific sets.
FAQs on spark plug wires and boots
What does a cracked spark plug wire do to engine performance?
Damaged insulation lets the spark leak to ground before it reaches the plug, so the engine can misfire, run roughly or start hard, often worse in damp weather. Look for cracks, burn marks or white tracking on the boots. A multimeter can check resistance against your manual. Replace damaged wires as a set.
Are universal spark plug wires safe to use?
Yes, when you choose the right type and fit the ends properly. Universal wires are cut to length and fitted with the supplied boots and terminals, so follow the instructions carefully and keep the routing away from the exhaust and moving parts.
What does the millimeter size on spark plug wire mean?
It is the outer diameter of the wire, and common sizes include 8 mm and 10.4 mm. It affects appearance and how the wire fits into boots and holders, so use the size your replacement boots and caps are made for.
Do I need to replace the boots and caps along with the wires?
Usually, yes. Many wire sets include new boots and terminals. Old boots can harden or crack and let moisture reach the plug, so fitting new ones with new wires gives you a sealed connection from end to end.
Is it fine to mix ignition wires from different sets?
It is better not to. A set is made for the engine it was designed for, and wires of different types or ages can wear and perform unevenly. Replace the full set at once.
