Electrical & Ignition Sensors & Switches
About Electrical & Ignition Sensors & Switches
Switches and sensors let you control the electrical system and tell the engine and gauges what is going on. Riders replace one when a control stops working, when a warning light stays on, or when they add accessories that need a switch of their own.
This section has two sub-categories. Ignition Key Switches hold the keyed switch that turns the bike on and off. Sensors & Switches covers the rest, from neutral and starter switches to rocker switches for accessories, an oil and air pressure sending unit, and a solenoid or starter button cover. Match the part to the model and year, and for an accessory switch, check that its rating suits the load.
Brands include GET, Jims, Drag Specialties, Dakota Digital and Slyfox. Switches work with Relays and Fuses & Fuse Boxes, and sensors feed ECUs, CDIs & Computer Modules. The whole group is Electrical & Ignition Components.
FAQs on motorcycle switches and sensors
What does a neutral switch do?
A neutral switch tells the bike when the transmission is in neutral, so the neutral light comes on. On some models it also takes part in the starting circuit. Check your manual for how your bike uses it.
How can I tell whether a sensor or switch is faulty?
Check the connector and wiring first, then test it with a multimeter against the figures in your service manual. A dirty or loose connector is a more common cause than a failed part.
Can I add accessory switches to my handlebars or dash?
Yes. Use a switch rated for the load, and run high-draw accessories through a relay and a fuse. Wire them so they do not drain the battery, and follow the instructions for the switch you choose.
Why does my oil pressure light stay on?
Do not assume the switch is bad. Low oil level or low oil pressure can cause it, so shut the engine off and check the oil level first. If the light stays on, have the bike checked before riding.
What is a sending unit?
A sending unit is a sensor that sends a reading, such as oil pressure or temperature, to a gauge. They are made for a particular range and thread, so choose one that matches your gauge and the port on your engine.
