About Brake Lines, Hoses & Fittings

Brake lines carry fluid from the master cylinder to the caliper, and they flex every time the front end moves. Riders replace them when a hose cracks, bulges or weeps, when they fit taller handlebars, or to swap rubber hose for braided stainless.

Length and fit come first. Listings include Harley-Davidson front lines in original length and with an added 4 inch or 6 inch for raised bars, ABS versions, and universal lines in lengths such as 18, 40 and 78 inches. Handlebar cable and brake line kits for ape hangers are listed here too. Finishes vary, with black, clear, stainless steel and carbon fiber-style lines listed. Braided stainless lines usually feel firmer than rubber, but they do not shorten stopping by themselves. Fresh fluid and a proper bleed are part of any line change.

Brands here include Drag Specialties, Barnett, Pro Circuit, Fat Baggers and LA Choppers. Bike-specific lines are easiest to find by choosing your machine in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. A line connects Brake Master Cylinders to Brake Calipers & Brackets, and while the system is open it is worth checking Brake Pads, Rebuild Kits & Parts and Brake Cables & Rods.

FAQs on motorcycle brake lines

Are braided stainless brake lines better than rubber?

Braided lines swell less under pressure, so the lever usually feels firmer, and the braid resists abrasion. They do not make the bike stop in a shorter distance by themselves. Choose a line built for your model and replace aged lines of either type.

How do I choose the right length for ape hanger bars?

Use the line or kit listed for your bar style and rise, or add the extension your bars call for, such as the +4 inch or +6 inch lengths listed here. A line that is too short limits steering, and one that is too long can loop in the way.

Should I reuse the crush washers on banjo fittings?

No. Crush washers deform to seal and should be replaced whenever the fitting is loosened. Reusing them is a common cause of leaks. Fit new washers and tighten to the torque in your manual.

Why do ABS models have their own brake lines?

Lines for ABS bikes are listed separately because their routing and fittings differ from non-ABS bikes, and the ABS unit sits in the path. Use the line listed for your exact model and year.

What are the signs of a failing brake hose?

Cracks, bulges, soft spots, fluid weeping at the fittings, or a lever that feels spongy are all warnings. A hose in that state should be replaced right away, followed by a fresh fluid fill and a full bleed.
