About Windshields

A windshield or windscreen deflects the wind that would otherwise hit your chest and helmet, and it changes how tiring a highway ride feels. Riders fit one for long-distance comfort, for less wind noise and buffeting, to protect against bugs and debris, or to replace a scratched or cracked screen.

The first decision is the kind of screen. Sport bikes use windscreens shaped to the fairing, such as the double bubble style listed here for models like the CBR600RR, YZF-R6 and GSX-R, which gives extra height at the top for a rider tucked in behind it. Other listings cover BMW, Suzuki and Yamaha screens, plus full folding windshields. Next is tint: clear screens give the best view, while light and dark smoke cut glare but dim your view at night. Height matters most. A screen too short does little, and one that puts its top edge in your line of sight is distracting.

Brands in this category include Ciro, Zero Gravity, Puig Hi-Tech Parts, Drag Specialties and Memphis Shades. Screens are cut for a particular bike, so pick yours in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. For mounting parts see Mounts, Brackets & Hardware, and for the surrounding bodywork see Fairings, Plastics & Body Kits and Other Body & Frame. The whole section is Body & Frame.

FAQs on motorcycle windshields

How tall should a motorcycle windshield be?

It depends on your seated height and the bike. As a starting point, the top edge should sit below your eye line so you look over it or through it comfortably. A taller screen blocks more wind but can cause more turbulence, so size it to your riding style.

What is a double bubble windscreen?

A double bubble windscreen has a second raised contour near the top. On a sport bike the extra bubble gives the rider more room to tuck in behind the screen. It is made for a specific model, so check the fit.

Is a dark smoke windshield a problem at night?

It can be. Dark smoke reduces glare in bright sun, but it also cuts the light reaching your eyes after dark. Clear or light smoke is easier to see through at night, so choose the tint that fits when you ride.

How do I clean a windshield without scratching it?

Rinse off grit first, then wipe with a soft microfiber cloth and mild soap and water. Avoid household glass cleaners with ammonia and rough paper towels, because most windscreens are plastic and will haze or scratch.

Why does my helmet buffet with a windshield?

Buffeting often comes from turbulent air breaking off the top edge of the screen right at helmet height. Raising or lowering the screen, changing its angle, or choosing a different height can help. Test with small changes on the road.
