Additional Seat Parts
About Additional Seat Parts
Additional seat parts are the smaller pieces around a seat: cushions, pads, screws and knobs, bolts, bushings, brackets, side plates and a detachable pillion. Riders buy them to stop a seat rattling, replace lost fasteners, add padding, or fit a pad and bracket for a sissy bar.
Match the hardware exactly. Listings show 1/4-28 and 1/4-20 screws and knobs, which are different thread pitches and do not interchange, in finishes such as chrome and stainless. A seat cushion adds padding to an existing seat, so check its size and how it attaches before you order. Pad brackets and pillion pads are model specific, such as the Harley-Davidson examples listed here, so use the Ride Finder at the top of the page. After any seat work, check that the seat is secured, since a loose seat can shift while you ride.
Brands here include Mustang, Colony, HardDrive, Ciro and Drag Specialties. For complete seats see Seats, for new covers see Seat Covers, and for sissy bars and backrests see Backrests. The wider group is Seats, Parts & Accessories.
FAQs on seat hardware and accessories
What is the difference between 1/4-20 and 1/4-28 seat screws?
Both are a quarter inch in diameter, but 1/4-20 has 20 threads per inch and 1/4-28 has 28. They do not interchange, and forcing one into the other will strip the threads. Match the thread to the seat's mounting nut or hole, or to the original screw.
Why does my motorcycle seat rattle or shift?
Common causes are loose or missing screws, worn rubber bushings and worn or bent mounts. Check each fastener and the mounting points, replace worn bushings, and make sure the seat latches fully. A seat that keeps moving after that may need new mounting hardware.
Does a seat cushion fit any seat?
No. Cushions come in set sizes and attach in different ways, so check the dimensions and the attachment against your seat. Padding adds some height, and a cushion improves comfort but is not a substitute for a seat that fits.
What is a pillion?
A pillion is the passenger seat or pad behind the rider. A detachable pillion, as listed here, can be removed for solo riding. Check the listing for the models it fits and the hardware needed to mount it.
Can I use stainless bolts in place of the original seat bolts?
Yes, if the diameter, thread and length match. Stainless resists rust but can be weaker than some hardened steel bolts, so do not overtighten. Use the same size and thread as the original, and follow the service manual's guidance.
