About Kick Stands & Center Stands

A kickstand holds a motorcycle upright when parked, a center stand lifts it onto both wheels, and a sidestand foot widens the base so the stand does not sink into soft ground. Riders replace a bent, worn or missing stand, fit an extended one after changing the bike's ride height, or add an adjustable stand to an off-road bike.

Length is the critical measurement. A stand that is too long leaves the bike standing nearly upright and easy to push over, and one that is too short leans it too far. Follow the maker's lean angle, and choose an adjustable stand or an extension to correct it; the listings here include adjustable stands, 1 inch extended versions, and chrome and black finishes. Sidestand feet are listed by model, such as the Honda Africa Twin, KTM 790 Adventure and Kawasaki Versys 650. Many modern bikes have a stand switch that stops the engine if the bike is in gear with the stand down, so check that a replacement works with it.

Brands here include UFO, Zeta, HardDrive, Drag Specialties and PSR. A folding bike stand for maintenance is also listed, so check its weight rating against your bike. For other mounting needs see Mounts, Brackets & Hardware. Pick your bike in the Ride Finder at the top of the page. The wider group is Body & Frame.

FAQs on kickstands and center stands

How long should a motorcycle kickstand be?

Long enough that the bike leans slightly toward the stand and feels stable, but not so long that it stands nearly upright. After lowering, lifting or changing the suspension, recheck the lean angle. Follow the maker's guidance and avoid parking on steep or soft ground.

What is a sidestand foot for?

A sidestand foot is a wider pad that fits the end of the stand and spreads the load, so the stand sinks less in soft ground such as dirt, grass or hot asphalt. Feet are made for particular models, so use the one listed for yours.

Why will my motorcycle not start with the kickstand down?

Many modern bikes have a stand switch that cuts the engine if the bike is in gear while the stand is down. A replacement stand has to work with that switch, so check the listing and the position of the switch when you fit it.

Is a center stand better than a kickstand?

They do different jobs. A center stand lifts the bike onto both wheels, which helps with chain care and storage, but it only works on bikes with mounting points for one. A kickstand is for everyday parking. Check that a center stand is listed for your model.
