Cleaning & Detailing
About Cleaning & Detailing
Cleaning and detailing products remove mud, road salt, bugs, brake dust and grease, and protect finishes for storage or for show. Off-road riders shop here after muddy rides, street riders to keep paint, chrome and leather looking good, and anyone selling a machine to get it ready.
Listings include bike and ATV washes, a mud cleaner, a bike cleaner concentrate, a heavy-duty degreaser, brake parts cleaner, metal polish, rust remover, leather cleaner, water spot and mildew stain removers, and detailers. Match the product to the surface: paint and plastics need a wash made for them, greasy metal calls for a degreaser, and leather needs a leather cleaner. Keep degreasers and any cleaner away from brake pads and discs unless the label says it is for brake parts. Test a new product on a small area first.
Brands here include Lucas, Drag Specialties, Hog Wash, Permatex and Memphis Shades. Related products are in Chemicals & Lube and Misc. Accessories, part of Accessories.
FAQs on cleaning and detailing a motorcycle
Can I use dish soap to wash my motorcycle?
It is better to use a wash made for vehicles. Household dish soap can strip wax and grease from finishes and parts that need it. Whatever you use, follow the label, wash when the surfaces are cool and rinse thoroughly.
How do I clean brake dust or oil off rotors?
Use a cleaner sold as brake parts cleaner, following the label, and let it dry fully. Keep it and any other chemical off the brake pads, because contamination can reduce braking. If a pad is soaked in oil or grease, replace it.
Is it safe to pressure wash a motorcycle or ATV?
With care. High pressure can force water past seals into wheel bearings, electrical connectors and the air intake. Use a low setting or a hose, keep the nozzle at a distance and avoid spraying at the bearings, connectors and intake.
How do I care for a leather seat or jacket?
Use a leather cleaner and protectant made for the job and follow the label. Test it on a small hidden area first, wipe off any residue and let the leather dry naturally. Avoid harsh solvents, which can dry or stain leather.
How often should I clean my motorcycle?
Clean it after muddy rides, and rinse off road salt as soon as you can after winter riding. Dirt and salt hold moisture and wear parts. A regular wash also makes it easier to spot leaks, loose parts and cracks.
