Dunlop Motorcycle Tires

Tire shopping starts with a number printed on the sidewall, and Dunlop is a brand where that number matters, because the catalog runs from 60/100-12 small-bike tires to 240/40R18 cruiser rears. We list about 330 Dunlop tires in Tires, plus a handful of mousse tubes and other wheel parts in Other Wheel & Tire Parts.

Rider Magazine reports that Dunlop was founded in Ontario, Canada in 1923, began building motorcycle tires at its Tonawanda, New York plant in 1973, and has been original equipment on Harley-Davidson Sportsters since 1981.

Sport and street radials. The Sportmax range is the biggest group, with about 60 listings across the Q5, Q5A, Q5S, GPR-300 and Roadsmart lines. Examples are the Sportmax Q5S front in 110/70ZR17, the Roadsmart IV rear in 190/55ZR17 and the Mutant rear in 180/55ZR17. The Roadsport 2 rear in 200/55ZR17 is a further option.

Cruiser and touring. The American Elite, Elite 3, AE2, D402, D401 and D404 cover cruiser and touring sizes, including whitewall versions. See the American Elite rear in MU85B16 with narrow whitewall, the Elite 3 rear in 250/40R18 and the D404 rear in 130/90-15. Some American Elite titles name Indian or Victory models.

Dirt, enduro and adventure. More than 80 Geomax listings, among them the Geomax MX53 front in 80/100-21, the MX34 front in 60/100-12 and the Geomax AT82 rear in 120/90-19. The Trailmax line includes the Trailmax Raid rear in 130/80-17.

Classic sizes and scooters. Older-style sizes such as the TT100-K81 in 4.10-19 sit alongside the Scootsmart 2 range, for example the Scootsmart 2 front in 120/70-15.

Reading the size

Take 180/55ZR17: 180 is the tire width in millimeters, 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width, and 17 is the wheel diameter in inches. R and ZR mark a radial tire, while a B (as in 130/90B16) or a plain hyphen (130/90-15) points to a bias design. The load index number and the letter after it, such as 73W, are the load and speed ratings. Order the front and rear sizes your bike's manual lists, and read the whole listing title: it states front or rear, and some end in TL (tubeless) or TT (tube type).

Dunlop questions

Can I fit a different size than stock? Only if the manufacturer lists it for your bike. Rim width limits what a tire can safely mount on, so start from the manual.

Does the same tire work front and rear? Mostly no. Most listings are marked Front or Rear, and a few, like the TT100-K81, are marked Front/Rear.

What are the mousse tubes for? They are foam tubes sold by wheel size, such as the 19" mousse tube, and each lists the tire sizes it fits.
